High-quality extensions are an investment — and like anything valuable, they need care to stay beautiful. Whether you wear clip-ins, tape-ins, or sew-ins, these five tips will keep your extensions silky, shiny, and tangle-free for months.
1. Wash with Sulfate-Free Products
Traditional shampoos contain harsh detergents that strip moisture from hair. Always use a sulfate-free shampoo and conditioner to keep your extensions soft and hydrated. Wash gently in downward strokes to prevent matting.
2. Avoid Excessive Heat
Extensions don’t get natural oils from your scalp like real hair does, so they can dry out faster. Use a heat protectant spray before straightening or curling. Stick to a temperature below 350°F (180°C) to avoid damaging the cuticle.
3. Brush Gently
Brushing aggressively causes shedding and breakage. Use a wide-tooth comb or loop brush designed for extensions. Start detangling from the bottom and work upward to keep them smooth and intact.
4. Proper Storage is Key
When not in use, store clip-ins in a satin or silk bag or on a hanger to keep them from tangling. If you have tape-ins or sew-ins, sleep with your hair in a loose braid or ponytail and use a silk pillowcase to reduce friction.
5. Deep Condition Weekly
Once a week, treat your extensions to a deep-conditioning mask. Leave it in for 20–30 minutes to restore moisture and shine. This step is especially important if you heat style often.
Bonus Tip: Be Gentle
Extensions are durable but not indestructible. Avoid pulling, yanking, or sleeping with wet hair. A little extra care goes a long way.
